Trendy or Traditional?

5 reasons why a

Remember when you were a little kid flipping through your parents wedding album thinking it was the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen? Well, that’s what we like to think back on and believe, right? But now that you have a better sense of reality, if you looked at them now you probably say “holy cow those dresses are the worst color on the planet” or “I would NEVER pick that color table cloth.” Now that it is no longer the 70’s or 80’s what is keeping that terrible vision from recurring in your own wedding and for your future children to look back and say the same thing? A question you should ask yourself when planning is “Do I want to be trendy or traditional?” But who really knows what traditional is anymore, so much has changed and are constantly evolving in the wedding world.

It can be overwhelming looking at all of the weddings on Pinterest or reflecting on your friends weddings from last Spring. Not every wedding has to have a theme per say, but you should try to direct your eye to a certain feel you want your guests (and you most importantly) to have when walking into your space. Take a moment to sit down and think about the energy you want in the room. Do you feel you want a black tie affair, mellow music, light conversation? Or are you more of an energetic, free willed person that gravitates towards a louder room, bright natural light, and fun appetizers? Somewhere in between? Once you nail that down you will want to pick a color palate. And no, you do not need to stick to two or three solid colors. You can choose an array of colors that compliment each other which will give you more options and variety with a focus on a few of them for your main inspiration. Then think what kind of reception you would like. Do you want a cocktail feel? Plated meal? Buffet? This will determine the over all flow of the evening which will then help with where these colors will work best.

I see cocktail receptions tending for 2016, so let’s say for example you want to go with that feel and a navy blue color palate with coastal inspiration. How Annapolitan of you 😉 Think of your table decor and the space you have for your reception and place the colors accordingly. I love mix and matching table linens to bring life to a room! For example, use an ivory linen on your cocktail tables and sash them with a nautical rope. On your seated tables use a navy linen for the base and place a blue and white stripped runner across the table, and compliment with an ivory napkin. To bring in a bit more color think about using flowers for this, and for texture think of some unique table accents such as driftwood, lanterns or nautical rope. This is a more traditional feel but has some trendy touches. I always suggest going this route so you do not regret going too trendy years down the road! For the girls dresses think of a color that will compliment navy so it isn’t too overpowering…such as a blush pink or glittery gold which is always fun for pictures. Here are a couple of my favorite photos by Tara Peddicord from one of my favorite weddings this past year. The couple wanted nautical but not overwhelming, and wanted it to feel like home. Fun fact, this was also featured on Bayside Bride! This wedding was the perfect mix of personal and Annapolitan style. A little trend, a little tradition, and lots of fun!
